I'm reasonably sure the 71's came with 12 Bolt rears. Someone may have swapped in an 8.5" 10 Bolt. Does the bottom of the center housing have a square looking lug on each side like the ones in the picture?

Do you mean it's like a 9" Ford rear that the center section comes out the front & has a removable rear cover?

rear end ID

looking to identify rear end, this is a removable carrier, has hard hat shaped rear cover that is removable.
This rear end looks like a Ford 9 inch.
This rear end has a 10 bolt pattern, with 2 bolts on each side towards axle shafts that are visibly closer together in pattern.
Un like Ford 9 inch, the only visible welds in housing are on top and bottom of dif. housing.
In axle housing taper from dif. to axle shaft bigger than Fords.

Is it a 6 lug pattern? How about a pic? Sounds like it may be a 1957 type truck rear.
