Rear end Identification

I picked up a shortened rear end which I was told was a Ford 9" posi. It was a great price so I didnt do my homework first. It has GM 28 spline axles that were cut midway and welded back together and ground (not a bad job). The third member had no additional housing around the pinion like the 9" and it is an open carrier (not posi). Is this rear end good for anything. Could I put alot of horsepower through it with those welded axles? The housing looks so much like a 9", is it possible that someone could jam a GM third member into it. Was this a popular thing to do at one time? I cant find any info on this rear end at all and I dont know what it is.

How would you feel if you broke an axle about 100 mph, and you watched where you had "just been" through the windshield?
