Rear end question on a 12 - bolt

i have a question ....

29.5 size tire and its 80 lbs, its going into a re-built rear end truck , 12 bolt

question, do you think its better to stay with the original 3.42 or go to a 3.73 rear end?

i hardly use the 1978 chevy big ten truck for towing but every so often i'll use it for hauling etc...

also a single wheel is better for daily driving or is posi- really worth the upgrade for simple driving... the motor is a 383 and the trans is a 700r4....

a mechanic told me it puts more stress on my motor for it to turn 2 wheels than one

I'd stay with 3.42 gears as the 7004r has a low 1st gear..
your engine never sees any extra load from 2 tires putting power down.. over a single..

Find another mechanic.

If you want to put all of your power to the ground then you need both tires pulling. Smoking one tire doesn't impress anyone. It just looks stupid.

smoking one tire causes spider gears to try and escape out the back cover. the difference from 3.42 and 3.73 is not that much, not worth the change
