Rear End Questions

i have a 85 camaro with a 71 chevelle 12 bolt rear end but there is a howling coming from the passenger side rear wheel and when driving at about 35 to 40 MPH my seems to drag but when i put it in neutral it coasts out and the drag and whining stops i pop it back into drive and it drags and howls the drag actually slows my car down kinda like downshifting into 2nd gear i have the TH-350 trans is my rearend going out or is it just a wheel bearing ? any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

A wheel (axle) bearing. Better change it NOW as the bearing rides directly on the axle and will do MUCH damage. Then its axle time!

sounds just like differencial bearings to me. if it was an axle bearing, the noise would even be there in neutral.

Yes, it does sound like a loading issue...when load is applied (car in gear) the howl is there, but when load is not applied (coasting in neutral) it goes away.

A wheel bearing does not act this way, but the diff gears do.

Sound does travel in weird ways, so even if it seems like it is coming from one side it may not be so.

Who set up the rear end?

the rear end was in the car when i bought however i didnt know it was out of a 71 chevelle until i put it on a lift so i have no clue who put it in and i have no clue on how to check the gears i know how to take the differential cover off but when it comes to checking /fixing them im clueless

if it is not posi you can jack up on wheel with the free to turn turn the tire and wheel one revolution count the number of times the drive shaft goes around and double the number of times the drive shaft rotates for a good idea of the ration. if the drive shaft goes around 1 3/4 then you more then likely have to 3.50:1. if it posi you can mark the drive shaft and the tire and have someone roll the car forward while you look and 1 rev of the tire and 3 1/2 times of the drive shaft will be 3.50:1 ration. good luck you can remove the diff cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and divide by the teeth on the pinion gear for and exact amount. checking bearings takes experience. basicly, while its up on a lift, have someone spin it up to around 40-50mph. off & on the throttle. and listen with a stethiscope(sp).

to physicaly check the bearings. the carrier and pinion need to come out. the bearings and/or races will be pitted.

its also possible that a poor install is causing noise. i have heard of this, but have never seen it. as my installs are always perfect.
