rear end shortening
I have a ford nine inch rear and the question is... can the axle tubes be cut and the bering ends(axle) and backing plates be put on so shorter axles can be used instead of removing the tubes and putting on new ones

Yes the rear can be narrowed without replacing the axle tubes. However, don't try to do this at home because it's very easy to warp the tubes when you re-weld them. Have a good machine shop do it for you.

Tom if you measure it..i can do it for you with a jig. Are you going to the swap meet at bristol on saturday?? If not i am only about 45 min ride from riverside park. I usally get 125. from the teams. But we could work something out. Its not that hard to do. I really wont have time to do a whole rear right now but if you just need it cut and welded i can sneak it in..if you do all the figuring and marking. Let me know..If you see the jig you will be able to make your own for less than 200 bucks materials. Its got to be real clean so its welds up good.

hey phat I don't have the rear out of the donor yet(70 merc marauder) infact I'm still waiting for the yard to deliver it so it will probably be awhile before I'm ready just doing some drawingboard planning and parts gathering and haven't decided which car I'm using it in yet. I have a 67 stang project and a bunch of late model stangs 2 460s one 429 3 C6s and 2 C4s but kind of leaning towards the 91 notchback for a serious building(berlin tnpk type car)with a little nitrous. they started a steet car class at lebanon valley on wed nites gotta have mufflers full interior and lights and my son is a speed demon so it will be a safe outlet for him (not the turnpike)will take the offer when we are ready thanks

Hey Tom the wed nite thing sounds like a great idea for the kids(me too LOL) If its for your kid just e-amil and we will get it done. Berlin tpk yeeeks that place cost me a lot of cash in the late 70's.(fines)

I haven't been down to the tpk in years but my son and his buddies have lots of ricers they say and there are a couple of shops here that truck a few street machines down there for some wager runs still, these guys are my age who own buisinesses but not brains
