I have a ford nine inch rear and the question is... can the axle tubes be cut and the bering ends(axle) and backing plates be put on so shorter axles can be used instead of removing the tubes and putting on new ones

Yes the rear can be narrowed without replacing the axle tubes. However, don't try to do this at home because it's very easy to warp the tubes when you re-weld them. Have a good machine shop do it for you.

hey phat I don't have the rear out of the donor yet(70 merc marauder) infact I'm still waiting for the yard to deliver it so it will probably be awhile before I'm ready just doing some drawingboard planning and parts gathering and haven't decided which car I'm using it in yet. I have a 67 stang project and a bunch of late model stangs 2 460s one 429 3 C6s and 2 C4s but kind of leaning towards the 91 notchback for a serious building(berlin tnpk type car)with a little nitrous. they started a steet car class at lebanon valley on wed nites gotta have mufflers full interior and lights and my son is a speed demon so it will be a safe outlet for him (not the turnpike)will take the offer when we are ready thanks
