rear end swap?

What do i need to consider when looking for a junkyard rearend to swap? I've got a '65 GMC 1/2 ton. Gears are howling like a junkyard dog. What are the issues I need to factor in? Width of axle, gearing, that kind of stuff?

I might just change out my gears but I'm curious all the same.

Look for a rear end from a similar truck......easier in the long run, especially if you have never changed rear gears before, and don't have the right tools.
