First a new crush collar and pinion nut should always be used and if new bearings are used make sure they are lubed. Holding the pinion flange the pinion nut should be torqued to approximately 175 ft lbs but the rotational force of the pinion should not exceed 5 to 8 inch pounds for new bearing and 8 inch pounds for used bearings. Generally I start checking the pinion preload at about 150 ft pounds and once the inch pound reading falls between 5 to 8 inch pounds I stop.
