Rear gear ratio ?

What is the best way to determine ratio of rear gears ?

Pull the cover and count teeth on the ring and the pinon. Divide ring count by pinon count equals gear ratio.

Do you have a cover or is it a 9" type? Some times you can find a metal tag on the 3rd member or if you don't want to pull it count the revolutions of the driveshaft by turning the tire exactly 1 rotation. Not real precise but it will get you in the ball park.
