rear gear ratio options. s-10

I have a Th-350 in my 86' s-10. I have open wheel 7 1/2" 3:43's. I'm running 4000 rpm's at 60 mph. I would like to drop RPM to 2500, or so. I'd like to get a hold of some 2:73's, but that would require a new carrier. Could I match up a 8 1/2" 10 bolt differential to my axles and casings? Posi, or LS would be nice too. Any suggestions?

the 80`s line camaro, firebirds, cutlass, regal, monte carlo, all carry the 7.5 rear just as the S-10 does. you could easily find a 2.73 or higher ratio in a firebird or camaro, carrier and all, then afterwards, just swap the guts, in fact, the camaro and firebird came with posi rears with a 2.73 ratio, the codes are:
1986 2HT 2.73:1
1986 2HV 2.73:1
go to a parts store, and get the hayes manual on these cars, it`ll give the codes which indicate the ratio as well as rather or not it`s a posi. all i did when i did this swap to my cutlass was go to the parts store, took the book to the counter and wrote the codes down. if your interested in doing this, the code will be stamped on the passenger side front axle tube. the rear gear I took out of my cutlass was 2.14:1, I swapped in a 3.23:1 with posi from a 83 firebird, so as you can see, the cutlasses came with a real high ratio also. good luck
