rear main seal

Hi, I am writing to find out the correct way to remove and replace a one piece rear main seal in a 6.5L diesel. I have not had the chance to do one yet. I have an idea on how to do it but want to be sure. Do I drill hole and pull out with puller and then just tap in the new seal? Thanks in advance.

hi there

i found this regarding the 6.5L RMS removal:

Remove the oil pump and rear main bearing. Just for precautionary measures, replace the oil pump with a new one. Inspect the rear main bearing face and crankshaft mating surface for any excess wear / mars. Pull the seal out of the bearing cap use a small screwdriver or awl to remove the seal that is still in the block. Clean all mating surfaces of the oil pan and engine block for the reinstallation.

hope that helps maybe

The 6.5 is a one-piece rear main. The biggest headache is getting to it (remove tranny, flexplate) but then its just prying out the old one and putting the new one in.

Its a bit tricky getting the old one out. I like to take a sharp knife and cut the rubber out of it so I can get some space to pry. I like using an aluminum or brass drift to punch the old one out, that way I don't risk scratching the crank or the bore.

Installation can be done by carefully tapping around the perimeter, but you risk hitting the crank or deforming the seal. I suggest finding a piece of PVC or steel pipe that is the right diameter and using it as a big round seal driver.

Coat the crank's sealing surface with oil so you don't damage the seal, and you can coat the outside of the seal with oil too. Some guys use silicone, but I've never had one leak on the outside of the seal where it presses in.

Just wanted to say thanks to all that replied. It worked out good, old seal out and new seal in just like you said.
