Rear Main Seal

Ok well I am doing my first engine build and feel un-easy about the rear main seal. I installed the main bearing and torqued down the caps. I installed the seal but did not read until afterwards that the seal needs to be offset.

So for one I need to removed the crank again and adjust the seal Do I need to apply sealant to the backside of the seal if so how much and what kind? and do I lube the sealing lip of the seal and if so with what and last do I seal where the cap recess's into the block on either side of the seal? I really if any oil leaks at all do not want the main to leak so I want it perfect.

Thanks So Much

Dan

Well, just make sure to have the lip on the main seal pointing in the right direction, offset it just a little, just enough so it doesn't line up with the cap seperating line. Apply a little oil, just regular motor oil, to the lip of the seal, but don't get it on the ends, then apply some anaerobic sealant to the ends of the seal. Put a LIGHT coat of the anaerobic sealant on the cap ends themselves and install. Torque it properly, and that should seal you up nice and tight!
