i have a 84 monte carlo ss and a weird noise is coming fromm the rear it is a whine noise when the car is rolling but when i hit the gas it goes away i checked the axle bearings what else could it be
Drain the diff. oil and see if there is meatl shavings in it. It sounds like a ring gear going south or a pinion gear. It could be the input shaft bearing going out. The reason the noise goes away under acceleration is that the gears are riding at the correct angle. Under coasting conditions (with a bad bearing) the angle changes and the gears make noise.
