Rear Oil Seal Replacement

Well I have my axle out and I need to replace the seal and probably the bearing too just incase. its off a 71 plymouth b body with 8 3/4 rear end. I do have a question though.

The seal's job is to seal the end of the axle so the gear oil does not spill out, correct? So that means the seal should be the same diameter as the inside of the axle housing so it fits snuggly right when the axle is put in.

However, the seal that the shop gave me was much smaller than the housing and even the bearings. So when I take the bearings off and put the seal on, the seal won't even touch the inside walls of the housing.

Is this right or is the seal supposed to be as large as the housing so it seals?

Also, do you suggest changing the bearings since they have to be taken off and pressed on?

Sounds like they gave you the wrong seal.

I am having a bit of trouble here. I received many different possiblities for my car from different shops, which is right?:

There are two seals, inner and outer.
With this, the bearing should only use bearing grease, not gear oil

There is one seal on the outer.
With this, the bearing should use the gear oil

There is one seal on the inner
With this, the bearing should use bearing grease.

Before attempting a fix i need to know the correct way.
