rear seal

how do you tell if an engine is a 1 or 2 piece rear seal?

Well by the year to start with, then if thats not possible you can crawl underneath and look at the block where the crankshaft exits. If there a round casting bolted there then its a one piece.

Then it's a 2 piece, I think it was '86/'87 that chevy went with the 1 piece.

Easy way to tell is if it has a driver side oil dipstick, it's a 2-piece RMS.

Having a passenger side dip doesn't necessarily mean 1-piece RMS, though. Passenger side dipsticks started around '81, one-piece rear main seals began around '86.
