rearend gears

how can i found out what gears are in a rearend?

it's not for my mustang,,,,it's for an 89 chevy 4x4 truck,,,,the rearend in the truck now doesn't have the same gears as the front end,,and i know someone who has another rearend,,i just need to figure out what gears are in it to know if it will match the front end i have

Look at the rear end housing there is a plate on one of the bolts that has the ratio on it. Also some times the door placard has the ratio on it that is on the drivers side door. Look there for now. If is not there and you don't have the window sticker the only thing really left is to open her up and look for a code on the ring gear or count teeth. There is also a way to turn the driveshaft and count the rotations of the axle but I'm not sure how that works maybe one of the other guys may know.

thanks for the help,,,i'll pass that info on to my brother. i don't know much about anything except mustangs (and not as much as i'd like about them),,,but i'm just trying to sell my brother's truck to a friend and we ran into some problems and needed answers.

thanks again for your help and hopefully he can figure it out from that



maybe i can learn some more about mustangs sometime soon also =)

or you can jack the rear up, block the front, spin the axle and see how many times it goes around before the tire makes a complete revolution...
