Rearend Question

I have a mud truck with a 350 In it with gag me 2:56 gears it doesnt throw much mud due to the gears. It also has a turbo 700r4 tranny. I have another older truck that I was told has faster gears.

What I was wondering is. How do I figure out the gears in the rearends in the truck and what would be a good gear to have for this application without having a 350hp motor.

thanks

Ed

Hi Ed,
How do you know the truck has 2:56es in there?
How did you find that out?

There may be a tag attached to one of the bolts on the housing that will give ratio info, or a door plate w/axle ratio

if no info there, you'll need to jack it up & support it.
Put a chalk mark on the drive shaft & the tire (or use the v/stem) & turn the tire one revolution while counting how many times the drive shaft turns, 3 3/4 turns of shaft 1 wheel revaluation
3:73-1 shaft 4 & a little, wheel 1, 4:10-1
if the gears are where you can count the teeth, you divide the ring gear buy the pinion gear.
Take care,
Rich

PS The higher the gears numerically, the easier to spin the wheels
