ReAssembled Engine Making Noise Not Running Right HELP!!!

I bought an older bike that was dissasembled. The engine was incomplete from the cylinder block on up. I went ahead and finished everything off and tried starting it today. It had trouble starting so I jumped it. When I finally got it running, it sounded like one of the cylinders almost had no exhaust it was so loud. I had it running for a little while but if I let off on the throttle it would just die.

After a while of jumping it to try and get it running for a decent amount of time, I took it for a ride. Every time I pulled in the clutch it sounded like it would die and when I shifted and released it basically jumped itself.

Now I can get it started but the noise sounds like something is wrong. Does this noise relate to the reason its not staying started. Because once i get it runing and try to let off completely on the throttle, boom its dead. I was thinking maybe a ring was bad but wouldn't it still run if one was bad?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
David

moer info..

Doc here

Not enough info to even begin to make an intelligent diagnosis..

IS it a 2 stroke, or 4 stroke..?

What does the sound , sound like..knock, rattle, ping, pop, etc..single or double knock, deep knock or light knock..

Rings=loss of compression and USUALLY smoke..

Tell us more, and we'll tell you more..

Doc

It's hard to say what kind of noise it is because I've never heard anything like it before. When i first started it I had the exhaust off. I thought that it was real loud because of this. But then I put it on and noticed that coming from one??????????? of the cylinders a sound almost like the exhaust WAS off. Almost like every time it fires its just a real loud burst. P.S. every cylinder is firing as i can feel it from the exhaust.

The thing is that this problem is obviously affecting its running condition. It's not just a knock that is there whenever I would drive it, it seems to be causing its demise.

I'd like to add that when I tried jumping it for a while, it would jump and sound like it was started but giving it throttle or pulling the clutch in would do nothing.

When I finally did get it started it was real hard to keep going, and I held it revved for a while. Well for a second the loud popping actually went away and I got more rpm capability but then I heard backfirig and it soon started to make the loud noise again. And no matter how long i kept it up it would give way when I let off the throttle. Then starting it was another issue

Also, when one piston ring was installed it was just sligtly barely bent, it went in ok but I dont know if this could be a factor. I was told by a mechanic that it shouldn't cause anything so?

I wish I could put a sound clip online

brand new head gasket was installed. as far as the valve, maybe some engine gurus can let me know if this sounds like a similar problem and if the results are similar.

i can buy a head off a running bike for around $50 if this could solve things. id rather be able to figure it out on my own without just replacing the head though.
