rebuild a 350 with 305 parts?

Hi, new to the forum. I have a tight budget and an '89 305 that seized on me. A friend has a 74 Nova 350 that he will give me so he doesn't have to pay the property tax on the car anymore. How easy is it to just swap parts from the 305 to the 350? Is it even worth trying? Any help much appreciated.

Oh, and the 305 is an LB9 engine (TPI) while the Nova has either a L65, LM1 or L48 engine (the three engines that came with the Spirit of America version). I'm not sure about the Nova, it's in another town and we just talked about it today.

Andy

Your heads and intake will bolt on to the 350 shortblock but the '74 350's had basically the same piston configuration as an '89 350, with the 305 heads that's going to put you at about 9.7 to 1 compression with a .041" thick head gasket.
You could use the 350 heads and modify the center two bolt holes on your TPI intake. Any of the '74 350's are going to be rated at about 8.5 to 1 but are probably more like 8 to 1 in reality.

That'll depend on What Parts you're asking about......

Why not just Stuff the 350 into where the 305 Came From........

All the 305 TPI parts will work on the 350 except the 89 roller cam and lifters and pushrods.
The cam and lifters and timing chain in the 350 are probabily shot.
Put in a new flat tappet cam and lifter set and a new timing chain and gear set in the 350 and bolt on the TPI heads, intake etc etc from the 305 and go. use the long pushrods from the old 350 and use the self guided rockers from the 305 on the 305TPI heads.

This replacement cam and lifter set from Summit will work very well with your TPI swap.
I would not bother trying to retro swap a roller cam in the old 350 block on this one. this flat tappet hyd will work peachy.

Thanks, everyone for your ideas. I think with everything that was said I will be using my tax return to get a new OEM engine for the car.
