rebuild chev 261: timing gear marks?

I'm trying to get the crank out so I can replace the main bearings. I have to get the crankshaft gear off and the cam out to do this. I suspect taking them out will be easy but putting them beack in the right place needs to be pondered. My shop manual says to line up the timing marks on the teeth of the two gears. I can't see them so I was thinking I could make my own marks. It doesn't matter how the cam gets back in the same place does it?

It MUST go back in on exactly the right tooth or nothing will work and you may even damage the engine turning it over once!
