I have a mini starter for a sbc I bought at a swap meet. Don't know the manufacturer but it has a small sticker saying - 12V UNI-604 - on it.

It worked for a while. But now it won't spin the flex plate even with the spark plugs removed. The pinion kicks out but the starter just kind of screams trying to spin. Took it apart and the gear teeth look ok and the bearings seem ok also. It works fine on the bench - pinion kicks out and spins. Put a different starter on the engine and it works fine.

Any opinions on what may be the problem are welcome.

I'd like to rebuild it but don't know where I can get parts - anyone know where I can get parts? My NAPA store says they can sometimes order parts if I can figure out what I need and who the manufacturer is.

Sounds like the bendix is bad. They are all pretty much the same I have used TCI, CSI, and Hamburger parts in a Tilton before. Other than a few minor differences most of them are a Hitachi nock off with a block to fit on a GM.

Could be an alignment problem also.
