Rebuilding a drowned 3800 Series III

My brother and I have the opportunity to get a series III 3800 out of a 2005 Grand Prix. The entire car was totally submerged in the flood waters that flooded parts of New Orleans. I know there is water in the cylinders and that all the computers and sensors are fried.

We are wondering if it would be practical to rebuild the engine to install into my brother's '02 Monte Carlo. What do you think it would cost (ballpark figure) to rebuild it?

We honestly don't have any idea as where to begin, any help is appreciated.

I would begin by wondering why you would replace the almost new engine in the Monte Carlo?

Drain and replace oil/water.

Take all the plugs out of the heads and turn over the motor about 20 times, then shoot a bunch of oil down in there.

Yank the motor out and yank the heads, check out the bores. If they look halfway decent, just run it.

The engine in the Monte has 125K miles on it. That and more power

Do you think it would require a complete rebuild? What about the sensors? I think the salt water may have fried them as well? Could I be wrong on that?

Hi

Man, that's one sad picture! ...

I live in Olds,Alberta Canada (Prairies) so of course I've never seen the effects of salt-water corrosion.

They do put salt on our highways after a freezing rain, etc. and we whine about that. The salt attacks suspension and lower-body sheet metal over the course of 10 or 20 years or so. But to see a 2005 Grand Prix looking like that is shocking!

Is all of this caused by the flood, or was some of it caused previously by high humidity and/or "sea air"?

If I get time tomorrow, I'll post the same shot of my 1998 GTP (3800 Supercharged) engine compartment for comparison.

PS ... 100,000 miles on a 3.8 is "just getting broken in" according to what I've been told.

All of this damage was caused by the flood. For the most part there is very little salt in the air around here to wreak havoc on the vehicles. The humidity doesn't do much either.

Oh, and the current Monte engine is GM's 3400 V6.
