I just had my 327 rebuilt and I can't seem to get it running right! 1964 small journal motor, 40 over, 280h comp cam, 461 heads with 1.5 intake/2.02 exh, 4bbl with eldbrock carb, petronics ign with a new coil. I have only have about 4 hours on the motor. It will not idle below 1500 rpms. The advance is @ 40 deg with 15lbs of vacuum and the timing is all over the place. I can't find any leaks on the intake or carb. The valves are all good and set What am I missing. The engine has been jacking with this all day and I am so ready to shoot this engine. Any help or direction to start in would be great. :confused:

What transmission? Stall converter? What do you mean by the timing is "all over the place" The timing should be set around 16 to 18 degrees base with that much cam and the full advance 3000 RPM and up should be 38 degrees.
What`s the fuel pressure? are the floats set correctly? what`s the compression ratio?

manual transmission. 9.5:1, stock fuel pump. the carb/intake was working fine on it when I took it off before the rebuild. the timing is around 40 at idle.. might be my gun with the jumping around.

no way timing should be at 40* at idle . bring your rpms up to 3000 then set at around 35-38* total .

The 280H cam will not work with a "stock" distributor. Recurving modification is required. (limit the mech advance curve travel to allow increased idle timing)
It wants 20-24deg initial-base at idle, 34-36deg at max mech advance and 10-12deg of vacuum advance. The 280H cam does not work with a stock low stall torque converter.
3000 stall minimum stall 3500 stall if you like to win races.
check the balancer/timing tab for true TDC using a piston stop. balancer rings slip and aftermarket timing tabs are always out to lunch. Correct as nesessary.
Check proper hyd lifter/rocker arm plunger preload. excessive preload/tight rocker adjustment creates a goofy idle.

use a 4.5" rated power valve/power piston step up spring in the carb.
Edelbrock/Carter carb max 5.5psi fuel pressure at idle.
PCV must be hooked up and functional.

Ok Guys thanks for the help. I will work on my spelling this time. I had the rocker studs pulling out on #3 cylinder. I got them fixed and got the timing set @ 14 ADV. When I found out about the stud the rockers had come off the valve and pushrod. Sparks came out of the zoomies. on that cylinder I shut it down and rolled back into the driveway. Once we got it all back together it started up and ran fine with no noise, but now the carb on the drivers side is just dumping gas(constantly dripping) , but only on that side in the front . I can't get any adjustment with the air mixture screws. I have switched two carbs and the same thing. I can't find any leaks anywhere on the intake, base or carb. Both carbs were new eldebrock carb #1)1405 and #2)1407. I have cracked both open and cleaned them completely. All the gaskest were good and if I had any questions I replaced them. Every port and jet was cleaned and blown thru. What am I missing?

You should check if the float is closing properly or the float level is too high.
If both carbs were leaking then you may have high fuel presure. It should be 5 psi. In this case, you only have one carb that is leaking.
