rebuilt th 400, problems

i just got my th 400 rebilt by a shop, and my old th400 had a manual vavle body in it,, so i told them to put it in the rebuilt one,, well i put the trans back in the car and put it in first and it ant going in first,,, it did a couple of times but not all the time,, so what could it be,, are there any balls to remove when installing a manuel valve body, the chevelle will shift into 3rd no problems,, car does drive down the road , just not in first,.

OK,
Lots of questions still.

First,
By no first gear do you not have engine braking in 1st or does it always take off in 2nd, even with the lever in the 1st position?

Are you sure the shift linkage is properly adjusted? Simple stuff first...

Does this unit retain the vacuum modulator and vacuum connection or does it use a plug in the vacuum mod place?
