re: receiving spam emails
Whoever the immature idiot is that is signing me up for all the gay spam can stop now.
It's OBVIOUSLY coming from someone on here since all these newsletters are addressed to James Lawrence or powermelissa. That's NOT the way to win someone over, or "get me" for posting on here. It only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch. At least there are only about a half dozen "suspects" to choose from. Maybe it's Roger since he's been spamming forums with the link to this thread. |

re: receiving spam emails
No idea who is sending you adult-oriented email in connection with this discussion, if indeed that's what's happening. If you like you can open up a dedicated thread to discuss it. If it makes you feel any better, I get thousands of those sent to me every day. I'm surprised your spam filter isn't catching them, as they sound pretty blatant.
---- Here are three more sites publicly posting about this: http://www.streetcarchaos.net/forum...ead.php?t=11337 http://www.carjunkieforums.com/inde...ic=793.msg23147 http://fbodyaddict.com/forum/forums...w.asp?tid=27273 I've noticed that the automotive forum admins are employing a variety of methods to handle PowerTV. Two common ways that this is being handled are deleting (or editing) the threads in which they've posted videos, and banning the PowerTV usernames. On some of the sites that are banning PowerTV people, you can see it because the word "Banned" is placed under their username, or listed on their user profile page, or an admin/mod publicly mentions that they've been banned. Here are some more examples that are coming up in Google today: powermelissa banned on DFWStangs.net powermelissa banned on StangNet.com powerjon banned on StangNet powermelissa banned on VADriven.com powermelissa banned on GTCars.ca powermelissa banned on NastyZ28.com powermelissa banned on DigitalCorvettes.com powermelissa banned on TampaRacing.com powerjon banned on TampaRacing.com powermelissa banned on SEMBMuscleCarClub.com powerjon banned on SVTPerformance.com nmrajames banned on StreetFire.net. |

Sorry, can't take credit for that. So, I posted a link to this thread in 2 forums that I have happened to be a member of for quite some time. So how's that spamming? |

re: receiving spam emails
I totally agree, we don't need to play the adult spamming game, even against booger. Of course, that assumes a couple things. One.. that it actually happened, and two... that someone here did it. Personally I doubt it was someone here. My money is on powermelissa, powerjon, or nmrajames, they are exactly the type who would pull that kind of crap, that is providing its not a figment of booger's imagination.

The filter isn't catching them until I add them because they're addressed to me, like I signed up for them. All of the forums/newsletters ask for a confirmation, so that's pretty much all I'm getting (and not responding to), but it's the point that someone posting here or reading this thread has actually gone to the trouble to visit these sites to sign me up. I just find it ironic that they are signing me up for spam to get me back for my opinions in this thread. |

PM me your email address, I'll be happy to set up a rule in Outlook to forward them to you. Then you'll see how big of a figment it is. You'd be able to check the header information to see that they're forwarded (and that I'm still not in NC) I can just about guarantee that nobody at PowerTV did that. |

re: receiving spam emails
Well really you are wide open to spammers...you have contact information in your profile on this site and then the fact that your user name is your e-mail address does not help either. Most folks that have been around the inter-net awhile hide thier addresses. I get a lot of what you are talking about too, but my spam filter catches it even if it is addressed to me because it picks up on key words etc. The ones that get by..I just hit the delete button and go on.

Back on topic, THIS IS EXACTLY HOW IT SHOULD BE HANDLED if the forum has exclusive advertising rules. Banning/deleting would the proper course of action. The spoof site/pics are funny, but I still think that's hindering the professional attitude you're trying to portray with this whole situation. |

re: receiving spam emails
I just wish I knew how to do stuff like that! I don't even know how to look up an IP address, what it means, or why we need one in the first place but everyone here talks like that is the holy grail. For about the past 6 months I started getting pen*s enlarger and Viagra ads by the dozen daily. Almost canceled my email account because of them (Power TV marketing strategy in action!?). Then all of a sudden they quit 100%. I still get a few emails that are blank - no addresser or body. Seems like my Norton interface changed about the same time so maybe they updated me and are blocking? Have I ever mentioned I HATE computers?

Are yours addressed to James or Melissa Lawrence by name sent to your email account that they have nothing to do with? THAT'S where the difference lies. The crap I'm getting is above and beyond all the "regular" email spam that comes from having my contact info posted for my website purposes. |

The mods/admins here can click a button in the post to look up what IP it was posted from. That's basically your "street address" on the internet. You can use the IP to track where the poster is from *provided you use an accurate tool* The spam probably quit because your filter was updated, or you installed a newer more powerful version, or your ISP started filtering more junk mail. |

re: receiving spam emails
As far as spam, I migrated to Earthlink a few years ago because of the enormous amount that I was getting on AOL, ATT then another that I don't recall the name. Earthlink has a great spam filter - if it isn't in your personal address book, you don't get it and it stays on their server. You have the option of opening it - but until you move it, it is the ISP's. I also have ten anonymous email addresses that they provide. These messages received there never reach my computer unless I move them manually. I uses one of them for Hotrodders.com as well as any other forum I visit and am member. IMO, this has saved my 'bacon' as I to date, have never had a hard drive infection

On most forums, IP lookup is an administrator tool. I'm a moderator on another forum unrelated to the car hobby that uses similar software to this one. IP addresses are usually 4 blocks of numbers between 0 and 255, such as 123.123.123.123, and if you Google IP lookup there are a number of sites where you can lookup where the user has posted from. We've used this, for example, to report an abusive user to their supervisors at the military base they worked and posted from. Abusive users may try to get around bans by re-registering, which is easy to block if the user is less computer savy and tries to re-use their e-mail, but admins can block more crafty abusers who register new anonymous e-mails by blocking their IP. In extreme cases, an abusive user might be working from some kind of computer lab such as a public library or at school where their last number of the IP might vary, or they might login with free trials from AOL or other such providers, and in such cases admins can ban a range... But the problem is that this carries the risk of catching legitimate users of the same internet service. I'm not as familiar with the relevant laws as a network admin would be, but signing someone else up for e-mail lists they don't want is, I believe, a violation of one or more of laws or terms of service, and sometimes if you get a message from an e-mail listing that someone else has signed you up for, they will provide the IP address of whoever originated the sign-up and it may provide a link for reporting such activity. |

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$ My comment on the spamming of your email with adult websites. It is wrong, period. Nothing else needs to be said. Back on Topic???? That is not how you started this confrontation with Jon and the others on this site. Here is your exact quote from page 5 of this tread. "I'm the owner and admin of MidSouthDragRacing.com. please remove the links to my site from your attack on PowerTV. You've never contacted me about this issue, and I don't want anyone reading your message to think that I have been, or that I support your attack on PowerTV." That was all that needed to be said, yet you took it further. On the same page 5 Jon posted a copy of the posting that he sent to all the forums indicating what PowerTV was doing and how they were doing it. You said you never received it. If you read the posting you will note that it really isn't an attack on anyone. It is a simple statement of fact as to what they were doing and how they were doing it. Jon made no attempt to sway you into not allowing their advertisements/videos, it was simply an informational posting. Again on page 5 you advised Jon that you thought he was making a mountain out of a mole hill. It seems to me that you are the one who came onto this site and made the mountain. All you would have had to do on your site was write a disclaimer to Jon's posting or ban him. That seems to be your corrective measure for a lot of things. Yet you took it upon yourself to come here to raise havoc. A simple request to remove your website from his listing would have been sufficient. I am sure that Jon would have abided by your request, if he did not do so already. But you chose to be confrontational instead and continued along that line. Moderators and admin people who control these sites have the right to put on whatever they deem suits them. I am a member of the Corvette Forum and when this subject was brought up by one of the members the thread was quickly closed. All they would have had to say is that they were contacted by PowerTV, the same way you were and they agreed to allow the adverisements/videos. It is a simple thing to let their members know that it is with their approval. What some people seem not to remember is that these websites would die if no-one posted on them. No members equals No/Useless website. Simple fact. The Corvette Forum was sold a while back and all the members were informed of the sale. They were also told there would be no changes in the forum Per Se. That quickly changed. The new owners worked out an agreement with Google to allow adverisements to come up on the first post of a thread. Members started to question those advertisements. That forum was originally like this one. NO ADVERTISEMENTS..... All of the threads that dealt with this subject were quickly closed and people were banned from posting on occasion and some for good. The forum lost a lot of good members and a lot of useful information from the lost members. All Jon is trying to do is to inform others and keep his website pure of this type of promotional streaming. His website was not set up to give anyone a conduit to advertise products for themselves or anyone else, it is a site for Hot Rod activists and car buffs. A "Forum" is a place to come and exchange views, opinions, information, etc. not a place to come to advertise wares. Steve |
