Recomendations On Buying A New 4 Speed Transmission

Hi guys I am at the point in the restoration of my 69 Camaro that I want to but a 4 speed. I don't want a 5 speed. What are your recommendations I have a chevy small block with about 410 hp street driven only, 3.73 gears. I have heard a lot about these new M22 super case transmissions are they all that are they as strong and dependable as everyone says? How loud is loud? that's a big concern. Can you talk to someone in the car? I think having it for resale value is good.

I have a buddy who will sell me his M20 for $500.00 but it needs a complete rebuild. What are your thoughts. I don't no if it needs a rebuild kit or gears, etc. So that could be pricey also.

If I go with the new M22 who do you recommend?

Any and all information you can give me would be great.
D

The M22 can certainly handle the HP you are talking about with no problem whatsoever. You are wise to be wary of the used M20. You very well could spend a sizable chunk of change on it. On the other hand, if you have the chance to do a visual internal inspection look for any gear teeth missing. Also look at the synchro ring engagement cogs on the gears. If they are all rounded off I would pass on the trans. If it appears to be in pretty good shape it would be a fairly good buy and could be freshened up with a master rebuild kit for about $160.

For a new M22 see the below web sites.

www.4speed.com

www.gearzone.net

They are both reputable firms.

I'd be a little leery of the close-ratio trans with 3.73 gears. Final drive ratio in low is 8.2:1, which would tend to be a little sluggish from a dead stop. I'd go with the M20 or M21W.

Recomendations on buying a new 4 speet trans

I run a M 20 in my 40 ford ,also I run 3:55 Ford 9 inch posi , and a 383 stroker with 500 Hp and it works great, like you say the rock crusher is real noisy , I myself would recommend the M20 or 21 .I just had my M20 refreshed for $ 150.00 .
