recovering dash pad
Another dash pad post.....
I bought a new reproduction dashpad for a 68 Firebird and its doesnt fit worth a darn. It has two posts that extend down the sides of the dash. Well these posts were not produced at the correct angle so when the pad is installed the posts bend (toward the driver's and passengers seats) and the vinyl (or palstic) wrinkles up where the posts bend. The dash pad is made out of urethane or some type of formed plastic.....so I dont think its vinyl. Anyway, what I wanted to do was cover this new pad with 1/8 closed cell foam and cover it with the whisper vinyl that I have. My big question is how do I prep the surface of the new dash pad (its plastic or urethane) for adhesion to the closed cell foam....and would the DAP Weldwood HHR adhesive be the best to use to adhere the closed cell foam to the new dash pad? Its the same problem as experienced in the post/topic below. Wavy dash pad Last edited by esahlin; 05-12-2009 at 03:12 PM. |

Yes, the DAP HHR (or any other quality top and trim) contact adhesive would be fine. You need to scuff the closed cell foam on both sides to make sure the adhesive bonds with the foam and the Whisper. The dash pad would also need to be wiped down with mineral spirits, scuffed, wiped down again, and left to completely dry. You want to take the shine off of it and also any cleaners, waxes, silicones, etc. that may have been used on it. After that, light coats of adhesive (light coat, let dry, re-coat) until you have complete coverage. If the pad is in good shape with no voids, cracks, etc., you can put the Whisper right over the pad.
