refinishing small parts
 
I have a bunch of small parts from my project, a 1970 Datsun pickup. Parts like these hood catches, and latches.

They were rusty, and in some cases the moving parts were stuck solid from rust, but I have removed the rust on one by electrolysis, and from the other by using molasses solution, in a crock pot, to keep it warm. Then a light wire brushing. They are currently in the house, where it is warm, and dry

These originally had a zinc coating on them, a yellowish color. I would like to duplicate that, if possible, but more importantly, I do not want them to rust again. I know I can epoxy prime, then paint them any color. I also believe Eastwood sells a sprayable coating that imitates the yellowish color.

They do have some moveable parts on them. I would rather not dissassemble them any farther, they are riveted together, but obviously the threaded parts I can take apart.

Has any one had experience with the Eastwood coating? Is it rust preventive?

How would you guys finish these types of parts?

I have not used the Eastwood but my local industrial supply house carries a zinc rich material in a spray can that seems to work fine for things like that..Check your local suppliers for that material..

I have used plenty of the eastwoods paint products including the 3 can kit of the yellow cad setup. They do come out very nice for what it is , but you still can't beat the real deal when your doing a top notch restoration. There are a lot of places that do zinc or cadium plating as the originals were done and that is the route I always try to go. The little details like that are what really hones in on a true restoration.

Just look in the yellow pages, you can usually find someone in the larger cities that will plate them for you. In my area the average cost is about $70 for a 5 gallon bucket of parts that you have already cleaned. Sure beats paint or trying to plate it yourself.

You have East side plating in Portland, says they welcome all customers big and small.

Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming. My local auto paint store has a two part 1 to 1 coating that would work, but in one gallon containers. they suggested a local light airplane hanger or repair facility.

"Yellow pages" google is so much faster. either way, looked at Eastside plating web site, that might be a good option.

You can always dip them in catylized epoxy. a nice satin black

I have actually though about mixing up some epoxy primer, dipping the small parts, and then filtering the primer, and spraying it rest on the inside of the fenders for the truck.

It's been a while since I researched it but I thought there were some do it yourself zinc electroplating how to's for getting a good match to the original yellowish zinc coatings.

Just thought since you were already doing the electrolysis you are a few steps away from electroplating.

Might be worth a google search?

Home shop zinc plating, now that is an idea. I have boats, I think I could find a old zinc anticorrosion anode around.
