Thanks, malc That is some really interesting stuff. I'm glad SR used Cal as one of the examples as it is probably the one of most difficult states to get a title in. I didn't realize that a zz4 crate motor could be considered smog exempt installed into a repro "kit car" as it fits into the range of years starting with 1960. Cool. ( I think that is how I read it)

SEMA has been lobbying for quite a number of years to make the registration process easier. I think they call it the "SEMA model legislation". I believe they were instrumental in several states smog laws being checked back as well. Even though they are primarily a manufacturers marketing alliance, it can only help their cause to make sure that the products their members produce continue to be sold and used legally.

It would be really cool if there was a How To in the knowledge base that could take a number of common special construction/ kit car registration situations such as "fiberglass body and repro frame" or "All original steel with no VIN/serial #" and walk each one through the process for each state. I wonder if there is something like that already in existence somewhere. Cboy had started a thread in the site suggestion forum regarding this a few weeks ago.

Any SEMA members here?

later, mikey

Thing is is that every state and province has some different takes on registration of cars and trucks..Soo the best we can do here is give some general ideas on how to go about it..

I have looked and some states have not even put their rules on the web so folks can find them..

I suspect it will be confusing to laot of people so the best I can think of is if one can find someone who has been there done that in a particular state..

Sam

Not only does every state have different procedures, the offices in those states can make you run through different hoops also. I have found that one DMV office will require something while another will not.
