Relief Cuts?

How do you determine where exactly to do this in order to have a smooth transition? Should you do it as you stitch or just make some before hand? How do you determine the distance between each one?

You determine where relief cuts go when the fabric is binding where you are sewing two layers together. The tighter the turn, the more relief cuts you need to make, and the closer together they are. They only need to be far enough apart to keep the fabric from binding. There is no formula, a square corner only needs one relief cut, and a circle needs a lot of relief cuts all the way around.
