removing body trim? how?

An advice on removing the plastic lower body trim on 1990's GMC SLE pickup. I will be painting it all black, and do not want to reinstall the trim. I don't know for sure but I think it is glued on somehow. Will a heat gun loosen it up...just pry it off... is it held on mechanically? If so ... weld any holes up with a mig? thanks

They did a piece on this on last week's "Trucks!" (or maybe it was Hot Rod - they were reclaiming a totaled late model pickup - body damage, rest of truck was in great shape - and took off some trim instead of replacing it $$$) TV show. Modern trim is glued on, no mechanical fasteners. They peeled the trim off with the help of a plastic Bondo spreader. Then they 'polished' off the residual glue using a rubber 'eraser' wheel in an electric drill. Came out perfect w/ no paint damage.

willys, I'd like to see them try that with a rust belt truck. Anything over about 10-15 years old, and the spreader might go all the way through. Of course, there would have to be some paint left on the truck for that to happen...

In a while, Chet.
