Does anyone have any sugestions on how to remove the clearcoat from old aluminum wheels without damaging or discoloring the metal underneath it? Thanks, Perry.

I had a set of Pontiac Trans Am honeycomb wheels they had powder-coated gold and I wanted them raw. I used the strongest paint remover I could get (from a paint supplier like Dunn Edwards, not the weak stuff they have @ Home Depot) and it lifted the powder coating right off w/ one application. Didn't harm the aluminum at all.

If you can get hold of some aircraft stripper ( not the relabeled stuff at Auto Zone) it will work great. If you have a fairly good sized airport near you go by and see if they will sell you a small amount.

Ive used that cheap crappy "relabeled" as Vince put it , Aircraft stripper on some clearcoated wheels off my corvette.
It took the clearcoat right off, and the aluminum under it looked brand new after the clear coat was gone.

I read on another post awhile back that Maaco has a real good paint stripper that they may sell to you if you ask. Worth a try.
