repainting wheels

i just bought some steel wheels that were blasted and painted red, years ago, then stored inside.

my problem is they are going on a blue car, and its not christmas time.

they are in very nice shape, and im thinking i just need to clean them off real good and wipe down with laquer thinner or something before i rattle can them satin black.

i know i need to wipe them down with something to make sure all the oils are off so greasy spots wont show through the black(had it happen before).
is laquer thinner the right stuff to prep the wheels?
do i have to sand at all? i really dont want to.

Depending on what they were painted with the lacquer thinner may damage or remove the paint. You will be safer using mineral spirits. The mineral spirits will take longer to evaporate.

And DON'T expect the rattle can paint to last very long on the steel rims. You might get a couple of months before they start to fade and peel.

i knocked the finish off the red paint with a grey scotchbrite pad, and smoothed out a little orangepeel that was already there, and painted with satin trim paint from an autobody shop supply house. the manager went through all his rattlecan stuff and said this would work best for my application, and give a nice satin black finish.

it did, i got the wheels painted and they turned out great. there are a couple thick spots i need to take down and respray.

I used rattle can silver on 6 lug gm rallys several years ago(3-4ish) ......the cheap dollar a can stuff . cleaned them up painted them clear coated them and they looked good for a good while still do the trim rings scratched them up a bit but they still look ok theyve been off the truck for a month and a half or so took em off when i put on alcoas . ought to sand em down and paint them again.

Mine are just rattle canned. If I ever get new tires and the truck painted, I will get them powdercoated, but for now they are fine. Been that way several years now.

Never use lacquer thinner to clean with before painting.
(I learned this the hard way-don't ask)

Use a good "Wax and Grease" remover. (that's what it's made for). :pimp:
