Do yourself and him a big favor and hie on down to the parts store and buy or borrow a GM lock plate compressor/snap ring remover/installer like the K-D P/N 2414.
You should use a steering wheel puller, too.
But we all know they can be removed w/o one- usually
- and it usually
won't bugger the threads or nut... but if it DOES trash the threads, you'll wish you'd have used the puller- of that I can assure you.
