replacement for Desoto suspension

I have a 1940 Desoto and have been trying to find a late model car or small truck with the same wheel base with no luck. The Desoto has a wheelbase of 122 1/2 inches with rear tread at 60 29/32 and the front at 57. Does anyone have any idea what I can use. I am trying to stay with Mopar products. Keeping the same frame and just plan on transplanting the drive train and suspension.

Is there a drastic reason for the chassis change?

The old MoPar front end is not a bad piece with a few simple mods. Rebuild the A frame and spindle parts. Install a disc brake kit (Fatman Fab.) A cavalier rack and pinion steering and re-locate the shocks..= Great front end.

8 3/4 Mopar rear or S-10 rear with relocated shocks = modern rear suspension..

No body mount relocation, no inner fender mods or floor pan re-do's.

drastic suspension change for my desoto

I plan on making this a daily driver and want to upgrade the ride for comfort since it is going to be used for long road trips. I'll look into Fat Mans front end a little closer but this is a low budget build with me doing most of it since I also do upholstory and paint. I've been watching salvage auctions for a late model that has been close to a total for the suspension other upgrades I want to ad. PW, ps....

Bobcrman is right. A simple front end rebuild along with a disk brake upgrade will give you everything you're asking for. I'm not sure if the old DeSotos had friction shocks but they rode pretty well and if the ride its too soft you could always install adjustable shocks to stiffen it up a little or add a sway bar to limit body roll.

Remember when buying a wreck for parts or a used clip of some kind you might save some money up front but you'll still need to rebuild the suspension to make sure its safe and functions properly. By the time you're done you'll have just as much money in a rebuilt clip or replacement frame (plus a whole bunch more work) than simply upgrading and modernizing your stock frame and suspension. If you're not going racing there is no real reason to swap frames as long as suspension upgrade parts are available.
