i got a 82 G-body and the previous owner painted the carpet with fabric paint and it looked so ****ty so i ripped it out and threw it away and patched some rust holes up......
i want to get new carpet and i was thinking about just getting half decent carpet at a auto wrecker and bring it home and steam clean it. i went and looked Yesterday and they only had a few cars with the same interior as mine and the carpets were all worn out. i think somone even pee on the one :nono:
what places sell carpet? like a big chunk and i can just trim it all myself. is the insulation needed for underneath too?
the rust under the carpet i sprayed on rust inibitar. would it be a good idea to paint the whole floor with ruberized undercoating to prevent more rust?
Believe it or not, a buddy and I replaced the carpet in his Dakota way back in the day with regular house padding and carpet like you get in the rolls that looks like trunk carpet. We used 3M spray adhesive and glued everything down. It looked great, and held up to the shopvac test very well. If I were to do it over again, I would probably just buy a premolded deal and be done with it.
Check out JC Whitney.

$130 for a molded carpet made to fit your car, including insulation glued to the back, and heel pads sewn in is a STEAL. Its not worth the time and hastle to cut a sew a carpet to fit.
I was looking for the form-fitted carpet for $130 ... I thought I'd see if it was available for my truck. But, all I see are links to car dealerships, etc.
I just completed putting Heat Shield Insulation from JC Whitney in my 74 corvette and would recommend it anyone doing their interior. I bought two 4'x6' rolls of insulation and 150' roll of foil tape for $60 out the door. It's easy to work with, cuts easy, forms well and is good quality. Pics in gallery.
Horvath...sorry I took so long for the reply. Been a pretty hectic day today. Anyways I clicked on the site that Shawn gave and I see what you mean. I did not do that to me when I went to it earlier. No wonder you were confused. Try this link http://205.197.94.62/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=SFNT That should get you there. BTW, from the way it looks they do sell to the general public. I think I am going to order some tomorrow.
I talked to the people that Kris gave you the web site for up at 2003 Carlisle fall show he said they kept a lot of inventory, would probably would be just as cheap to order from Kris. Doc
