Replacing front universal joints

How do you change the front u-joints in an '84 Chevy 4x4? I've got a non greaseable front u-joint that appears to have a little slop in in cap. I've never changed a front joint in this type of application and don't have a real clue as to how to totally change it. This truck has lock out hubs and I have had all the brake stuff off down to the backing plate. Am I going to need to pull the axle shaft from the center out? Or could I just knock the ball joints out and leave the center shaft in? Thanks in advance.

Chet

You need to pull the housing off that surrounds the axle. It bolts to the spindle with about 8 nuts. Once you get this off, the whole axle will pull out.

You do have the rotor off, right? If not, you need a spexcial socket to get the bearing nut off. I made one from a piece of pipe.

It's been 10 years since I did one of these, so I may have missed something.

I managed to fit "U" joints in there with grease nipples, but they are not easy to get at.
