Replacing rack & pinion

Hey Guys,
I'm replacing the rack & pinion on a Chrysler LeBaron coupe with
a 2.5 engine, 1989. Is it necessary to lower the front cross
member in order to remove the old rack? Having a tough time
trying to loosen the power steering oil lines.

Thanks for your help. George

It is not necessary to lower the crossmember, but it will definitely make your life easier. The power steering lines are tough, but the real problem will be getting the rack out. The area between the body and the cross member in the area of the rear crossmember mount is just slightly smaller than the height of the input shaft on the rack. A certain amount of twisting and turning of the rack will get it out, though it seems to be more luck than skill. Lowering the crossmember will not only make getting the rack in and out physically easier, it will make it much easier to line up the steering shaft on install, which in my experience is a humongous pain.

Edit - My mistake, didn't check the date. Hope you got it figured out.

Rack & Pinion removal.

Slowturbo,

Thanks for your suggestion, but I already lowered the front
cross member. You're right, it will be much easier to assemble
the new stuff.
Thanks for your help. George
