Reproduction vs. Original

We have been searching for a 1960'ish Mercedes 300 or 190 roadster. We have come across many 'reproduction' 'replica' vehicles that are very attractive in many ways, including price. I have no idea what the difference between these and originals are. Many of them have titles that do not even include the name 'Mercedes', instead they are 'Ford' or 'Chevy', yet look exactly like a 1960 Mercedes 300 Roadster. Why is that? What should I look for, and or, questions I should ask if we go that direction? Thank you.

They don't have a title saying "Mercedes" because they aren't a Mercedes. They will be titled as an '08 "kit car" or whatever your state allows. Some of the kit car mfg. use the drivetrain out of donor cars,(junkers) engine, trans, suspension, brakes etc. There are some nice reproduction cars and some real junk, in all types of cars. I'm assuming you have read "Kit Car" magazine, if not get a copy and do lots of research before laying your money down.

Agree with above post in all respects. These people cannot put 'Mercedes' or any other trade name on a kit car, because they'll violate copyright laws and get sued to death and back.

Do some serious homework. There are some real crappy kits out there. If you can, try to get the manufacturers to give you names of people who have bought their kits and check with them. If they hesitate, go somewhere else.

Also, if you can, go to the place where they are made and check them out in person. You're going to be tying up a big chunk of change. Make it count.

They might not be able to get you in contact with customers, but talk to people at meets or just browse forums to find someone else who has one. No point in being a guinea pig.
