restore or modify?

I just bought a 76 dart lite, the car has all the original parts, plus a broadcast sheet , thats somewhat legable. It has the 225 slant 6 with the aluminum intake, structural aluminum fenders, hood , deck lid and aluminum bumper mounts, 4 speed aluminum case. This car back in the day was know to get over 30 mpg. All i know is that there were less than 1000 produced, and maybe fewer with the 4 speed as oppose to the three speed manual shift. I read this so im not sure if thats true. Anyways my thoughts are this , tubb it out , drop a 440 6 pack and have a great street car ( strip ) or do you guys think i should just put the 225 slant 6 back in and have a nice grocery getter? They do have alot of room in the trunk. lol

Man, that is a tuff call to make for someone else so I think that you should do what ever gets your interest pumping the most ! As for me, I would Resto that particular vehicle !

matt167 03-17-2010 09:56 PM

go 1/2.. turbo the 225 slant 6. 600HP has been pushed out of them.. and if that's not enough, have an Aussie 265 HEMI 6 imported.. hi po versions were 320 HP stock with lots of room for improvement. and they came in Valiants so they'll fit right in

i would restore and u can get more money from it to by restoring it

cobalt327 03-17-2010 10:44 PM

Research it.

If it truly is 1 of 1000, keep it original IF there's a market for it. Often "rare" does not equate to "desirable" or "valuable".

Otherwise- if I understood you correctly that the fenders are Al(!!), that would make a killer FX-style replica-racer or gasser-style car.

This is what so few understand. There are one of ones out there and the only "one" that wants it is the guy who has it. There are plentiful cars out there (at least compared to 1 of 1000) which are desirable and will command big bucks.

It takes two to make and auction. Do the research. If you find two guys out there who would be willing to spend tons of money on this, restore it (no modifications, period). Build it the way you want it. Remember, you may be out of step with "buyers" so you may make it worth less. Third option is to build it the way it will sell the best.

Here is a link to an article with pictures. Looks like they had special graphics too.

I found a lot of google hits on it. Looks like more than one graphics style, and more colors. I like the turbo idea to, as long as a vintage car buff could remove it easily. Call it "Super" Dart Lite. :-)

Here is a car with different graphics, though I like the red-white-blue one. Looks more memorable.

If you do the "Super" in vinyl, or in One Shot sign painters enamel, it would be easily removed.

How many of the original 1,000 got turned into bracket cars and how many are still in original condition? I bet there are a lot fewer still original. I'd restore it, 10 years ago restored "economy car" from the 70's wouldn't have been worth much but now it could draw a lot of interest. I agree the Turbo would be cool just don't do anything that can't be unbolted.

Yes Hippie i think most got turned into bracket cars. My neighbor allready told me if i dont want it he would take it , lol. And i know exactly what he would do to it , he has a 605 aluminum block hemi, just sitting in the wings, 900 hp on pump gas .

CBV- Just a tip, but if you want to respond to a post w/the quoted info from another previous post (like I did here), hit the "Quote" button located below and to the right side of the post you want to quote from- instead of the "Post Reply" button on the left side. ;)

You can use the whole quote, or just a portion of it, depending on how you edit it. Just be sure the post you are quoting stays between the quote tags
