well im putting my car into retirement for X amount of time. just today i went to start my car and the wires smoked like no tomorrow!!!! i only cranked the starter for maybe 5sec because it did not want to start (normally i click the starter and vroom). i let off the key and a big cloud of smoke came from the bulk head of the hire harness in the engine compartment (i know it came from there because i opened the hood). i dont know why it did this. i fixed a wire problem i had a couple weeks ago and now this. so im not gonna try to fix this im just gonna park the car leave it till i have money for a new harness. im debating between to harnesses right now. im gonna have it parked for sometime so im gonna siphon the gas tank put the gas into my sisters mustang and thats gonna be "my car" till my car is fixed. MY sis dont drive her car at all right now and hasnt for sometime know. idk why but its "mine" now. should i do anything for my engine be i park it??? it might be parked for a month or 2. because i want to do a bit more work to it along with the harness.

Letting the car sit for a couple of months won't be
detrimental to it, you don't even need to drain the gas
just put some stable in it.

As for the wiring problem, the repair you did, is it in the
same area where you saw the smoke this time?
Just replacing the harness IMO isn't the way to go,
you really need to find out why it's doing what it's doing,
you may spend 4 hundred for a harness & get the same result or worse.

stuff some dryer sheets in the tail pipe and some under hood and inside around seats and in the heating vents .
it will not only smell good when you retry it , but there will be no mice eating your seats and building a nest in your heater and AC ducts .

how many you rodders know about mice ?
they can leave you with a mess can't they ?

Good advice. You need to keep the critters out!

I had a weird issue with a chipmunk once (years ago). He filled my breather and the intake tube with acorns. Never left the tube unblocked and sitting after that.

Fortunately, he did not chew any wires or anything.

the wire problem i had was very intermittent. but it had to do with my headlight switch that lead to my ignition switch that lead to my radio. i got it all fixed no problems no nothing and then poof!!! we have smoke . i think its just overloading something somewhere. but the smoke came directly from the bulk head to the back of the fuse box. i dont know which wires it was but im going to pull the harness and every single wire out of the car and look it over. and ill put in a full and complete new wire harness all wires will be new on that car . its weird normally i would be totally ticked off right now but for some reason it really isnt bugging me. i mean ya it sucks but hey S**t happens.

The reason i said drain the gas tank is to put the gas into my sisters mustang (ford yuck lol) so i can drive that around because shes not even looking at it so i might as well drive it. its a ford so my chevy butt will get burnt driven it but oh well lol. . . its a car that is at my disposal.

my plan is (since money is still tight and will be for awhile) ill park the car fully remove every wire in the car check it all out. then buy new. ill buy a new dist (which i new) and maybe even a new starter, battery and alternator just for kicks so that way every part of my electrical is brand spankin new. pricey yes but hey im in no rush at all. i might even convert to led lights all around and buy so nifty new headlights idk lol.

i would do all that to the ac/heater duct but i have a little secret. . . . i dont have any of that lol i tore it all out a long long time ago. i hate ac and the heater never worked. i will however plug my pipes and cover my engine real good and cover the seats.

well i feel like a total idiot . . . .

i figured out why the wire harness smoked i have a positive ground to something that shouldnt have one. i just hope i didnt fire the harness in my moment of stupidity lol.
