rev counter reads high, MSD issue?

So I noticed my rev counter is reading high. Idle shows 1800-2000 and a throttle blip gives 8k-9k (I wish!).

Some investigation leads me to believe the ignition system may be the issue.

The rev counter is an English Smiths gauge in a Cobra I just imported from there. The switches have been checked twice to ensure they are set for a V8 and not a 4 cylinder.

The distributor is a MSD Pro-billet (PN 8360) and the coil is a MSD Blaster Coil (PN 8202).

I am being told that the MSD coil issues multiple sparks, probably leading to this high reading and that the rev counter shouldn't be connected to the coil but a special rev counter wire, which I am unable to find??

Anyone come across this before?

Thanks,
Paul

Does this distributor use a control box--6A. 6AL, 7AL, etc. If so the tachometer hook-up is on the box--a blade terminal on the 6 boxes or screw terminal on the 7's.
EDIT: just checked MSD website, should be a green wire coming out of the base of the distributor beside the main 3-wire plug.

the plot thickens...

Upon close investigation I definitely do not have a green wire. Only the three wire loom for the coil/ground.

hmm...

After closer inspection of the MSD pdf file, you are right -no green wire. Instructions from MSD web site state that if tachometer reads incorrectly then you need a tach adapter to modify or stablize the signal. www.msdignitions.com

Yes, many thanks for that. I am awaiting my registration email from MSD support forums and will ask them directly. However I think this fits the bill...

The one you specified with the link is for magnetic trigger distributor(green and purple wires to msd box.) The one you need is different, MSD sells several types, I would call them because it will be specific to your distributor and guage brands(Smith's)
