I've driven those 280zx's and found them geared for brisk highway use. However, their engines are overwhelmed on take off due to the porky body weight and tall gears. With the exception of a capacity increase or turbo charging, modifying the 2.8 six in any other way would only accentuate that problem, . Seeing it's an old clunker, why don't you just drop in a 305v8 from that era as they're a dime a dozen? That would give you a 2.2 liter increase combined with 2 more cylinders. I know 305's are not very popular amongst a lot of our readers, but I reckon you'd be tickled pink with one under the bonnet. Rob

lmao dude i have a 305 in my camaro its over 200K miles on the odometer and it sees 100mph everyday on my way to work. its a fast car. you can get some serious hp from a 305. bone stock bottom end and some S/R torquer heads with 58cc chambers from world castings are a bolt on mod that will make around 270hp with a stock cam and a 600cfm carb. with a better cam and TBI prolly around 300hp. hot rod magazine got 307hp out of a nearly stock 305. this one is getting a rebuild soon and i plan on feeding a little air to it if i can find a turbo in a junkyard around here.
at the bottom of the page there are links to a few 305 builds one making over 400 hp NA..... either way dont over cam it or it will be a dog.... the good thing about a 305 is they are cheap!!! no one wants them. im constantly finding them with 45,000 miles and 60,000 around here in the paper. everyone wants a 350...thier loss your gain..... Yeah the 305 would be cool as it'll give the muscle car feel you're missing, and it's not over the top torque wise where you have to re-engineer the whole freaking car! No need for a 350 or the much loved 383. It'll still work out more cost effective than any mod's you can do to that boat anchor L28 engine.

I would say turbo it. If you want to keep the original engine, that's the only way to go. I guess you would also have to get an aftermarket ECM and injection setup to run it, something like the megasquirt. A 305 would definitely do some good, but money aside, why go that route when you could do something creative with what you have? I think a turboed 280Z would be cool.

Not a 280Z, but fairly close.... I think he's got a turbo LT1 or something check out the videos, you'll want a V8 in yours. LOL Or ya could turbo the origional engine..... Might be able to rig up a supercharger to it.....get something off eBay (Vortec supercharger for mustangs, CHEAP.)then just rig up the brackets and pullys and crap, that might work..... Post some pics of the car, i love the old Datsun Z cars :-D |
