richmond gear whine

Richmond gear whine...Is this as common as they say ; i have a 85 cutlass with a 4.10
posi the gears were given to me by a buddy who took them out of his buddies firebird because they whined they were suppose to have beenn install by a local perfomance shop. i had them installed by my father in law, who i know can do it right and they
still whine any suggestions

Yep, common, some do some don't, I think it's mostly due to rear end twisting and indexing and changing the locations of the gear, (lash).

I installed a set of Richmond 3.73's in my truck in August and they don't make any noise. The whine is due to the way the gears are cut. The lower the gear ratio, the less pinion teeth there are, so design adjustments have to be made to keep the amount of contact between the two gears at an acceptable value.

If the gear is installed right, it does not whine. You are using used gears that were probably not installed right on the first go around, you have little hope of getting them to quit whining.
