ring and pinnion
I have a 1984 Olds Cutlass with a 403 that I am bracket racing. It has a 3:42 rear gear and the engine is turing about 4700 in the 8th. The car runs in the 7.30's now. I would like to go to a better gear for getting off the line and ET. but I don't I don,t want to turn the engine over 5500 RPM. I am thinking about going to a 3:90 gear. Would this be too much for what I want? Thanks

That 3.90 should be real close. If you turn the identical trap speed with a 4.00 gear as you did with the 3.42 the engine will be at 5500 rpm and your E.T. will improve, providing it still hooks up. ;)
