ripped off

hi guys...I was wondering if anyone knows what to do about a garage who totaly ripped me off. I am not a transmission guy, in fact i hate messing with any part of it, so i opted to pay a transmission place to put new lines and gasket in my tranny. They gave me a pretty good price on the lines and average price on the gaket work. When I picked it up the place had charged me more money than negotiated for the lines...they also overcharged me on the gasket work. I initially was pissed about this but payed it anyways,(i was in a hurry, and the attendent told me the owner was gone for the day). Before i left one of the mechs told me how it was perfect and didnt "leak at all!" When i got home i crawled under the tranny...@#$%transmission fluid everywhere! They hadnt even installed agasket! They just used silicone! The next day(sunday) I took off the pan, bought a good gasket, and put new fluid in myself,(i really hate tranny work), it didnt leak a drop. i called the owner on monday and told him id like some of my $$ back beacause of the crappy job, he told me i shouldve brought it back and he wouldve fixed it, but it is very far to drive there, and my oil pressure is not so good in the car. I also explained how they overcharged me on the lines. He basically told me to go !@##$ myself and hung up on me. I called BBB, they told me there were a couple complaints listed which were ignored, an attorney wouldnt be worth it....but i want to do something!! does anybody know anything about dealing wih garages that rip you off?

I would have been making that drive right after he hung up.
Take the receipt for the parts you installed.

ripped off

Fill a bottle with Gas, put a piece of rag down the neck, go see the guy and hold it in your hand while talking.

Go to prison, new friends find you, hard to sit down.

Now on a serious note. I would contact your department of state. If you cant find their phone #, go to any repair shop in you state and it should be posted on the wall. It is a law here in Michigan. plus we can only go over our estimate by 10% without authorization.

squeaky wheels get greased. in a private shop you hvae very little recourse. with a corporate you can always go to a higher up/corporate office(i did that to a jiffy lube once and the guy eventually lost his jiffy lube lease). I would call the owner back, and give him another shot at refunding you. Then maybe go down there when they open and picket. just you and a sign (stay on the sidewalk) try and discourage people from using them, if he sees any customers go away, maybe he'll make you an offer to shut up.

I understand why you made the repair, but at this point you have made it worse for yourself , because now you have to separate your work from his. Did you get a qute on the price on paper? if not maybe have your girlfriend/wife/friend call up or go in and try to get a similar quote, then you can call the owner and use the quote against him...

may just wanna chalk it up to a lesson learned and do a little more research next time..

You would have had better luck...

if you had taken the car to a certified mechanic with your receipt for the work that you already paid to be done and he did the work to correct heir mistakes and verified what was and what was not done correctly. Then you might go to a Lawyer or to the owner of the trans shop with your info and get him to make it right. Right know its your word against whoever did your trans as to what was done or not done. It is always best to get and estimate in writing and then you can make them stay near their estimated cost for the repair. I wonder if you could get a local TV news team to look into their practices??

Nothing you can really do. This happends too often. Chalk it up to memory and post around on sites like this how bad a job that shop did, notify as many people as you can and try and run them out of buisness.

If you paid by cheque, you should have stopped payment right away,if you paid by credit card, contact the credit card company and they will look after it for you, visa is VERY good for this kind of thing.

Or take him to small claims court,it costs nothing, you don't need a lawyer, and if he knows he's in the wrong,he won't show up and you win the judgment by default,if he does show,it's all up to the judge, but at leasy you have inconvenienced him and have a shot at winning.

Or I could call my cousin Vinny.

If all else fails:
1. Find where he parks his car when he's at work.
2. Sneak up on it and spill a quart or two of used ATF under its trans, splattering some around on the bottom of the trans just to make it look good.
3. Hide and watch at quitting time & see if he takes it apart or not.

This is why I always do my own work. I'm so sick of shops. I have two stories, I'll try to be as brief as possible:

about 5 years ago I took my ramcharger in to a local shop to have the door shimmed on it after I did body work and had it painted. A week went by and no call, so I called them, they said they needed more time. another week went by and they said they weren't sure about it when I called them (keep in mind, they have never even called me about it up to this point). I called them after another week (a total of 3 weeks after I dropped it off) and the guy tells me the owner wont work on it and he wants me to pick it up and where have I been!? he asks me. I get down there and the truck wont start, all my stereo equipment has been stolen out of it and no work has been done to it at all. When I told the owner I was upset, he offered to fight me.

A week ago I sold my jeep. Two days before I had to hand over the title, the jeep was leaking oil. I noticed its from a bad O-ring behind the oil filter in the adapter. I had a shop do the work because of the time constraint. Took it to a shop and they said it would be an easy repair. I get a call later that they say they want to do 800 dollars worth of work to it and that the oil pan is bad. I surprise them with a visit (got out of work for this) and say "show me." THe guy (and I am not ****ting you here) points to an area of missing paint on the bottom of the oil pan where some light surface rust had formed. "Oil's coming out of here." he says, even though it was bone dry and the o ring above was absolutely slathering the right side of the motor with oil. I told him no, dont touch the pan, we're only doing the o-ring today. He starts getting pissed (this is where I notice there are no other cars to be worked on in the parking lot and my jeep, which hasn't been worked on yet, is still sitting in the bay at 1pm which tells me these guys have less than **** to do today and are trying to drum up some BS business). He started trying to tell me that if he couldnt' do the pan he didn't want to work on it. I told him its the o ring or nothing. Then he starts telling me "that's going to be a 2-300 dollar repair right there, too! I tell him, that's funny, the guy at the front desk said he did one himself last week and its a 60 dollar job." He was at a loss for words at that point.

I picked the truck up later and they tell me they had to change the oil on it. I got it home and the oil was the same oil that was in it when I took it in. Lying bastards.

If I had had the time and lived in the same city, I would have taken the first guy to small claims. THe second shop is a place that my old work used to take their cars to. I'll put a good word in for them to stop! ha ha
