rms watts?

I've been looking at new radio equipment for my car like amps, speakers, radio,etc...... and they all say RMS watts:blah blah blah & then watts: blah blah blah, but the "RMS watts" are lower than the "watts"

is the "RMS watts" the actual wattage?
if not what does it mean?

thanx

Jesse

RMS=root mean squared... Its the electrical average wattage of an AC wave, which is what music, voices, etc. are. Any other "watts" listing really means diddly. This is the only important one.

Most GOOD speakers will handle more than the RMS wattage they're rated for... They only see a given wattage for a SHORT amount of time.

Most GOOD amps won't even MENTION their peak wattage. They only mention RMS, and that number is given with a total harmonic distortion level, which needs to be as long as possible.

Head unit amps don't generate NEARLY the wattage they say. Divide most by half to get a near realistic number, and even then some are optimistic.
