rod bearings 4.3 chevy

I thought what I had was a rod knock now I am not so sure, I pulled the motor on my 2000 blazer and when I took off the pan I checked the rods and number 3 was pretty sloppy back and forth which I know they are supposed to move alittle bit but it was pretty bad when I took off the cap the bearing was worn but the crank did not look to bad.If I repalced all of the rod bearings just to be safe what do you guys think? Also the vehicle only has 50000 miles on it and it ran great besides the knock.I am wondering if it had a bad knock sensor or maybe a balance shaft noise?

if it was knocking, the crank was likely damaged

before you jump on that and tear into anything check the lifters. we had a 97 blazer that knocked like it was going to explode if you tapped the gas, it was the lifters. it was a new crate engine 4.3 v6 probably had 40 thousand on it when it started i ran the crap out of it all over town, took it off road, jumped it, anything you shouldnt do to a vehicle like that i did. it was unbreakble. and we never bothered fixking it

Now that you've pulled it out and torn it down, it's kind of late to mention...BUT-did you try isolating the noise with a mechanic's stethoscope first- to be sure that the one slightly sloppy rod was truly the source of the noise? Many things can sound quite similar- even a cracked flexplate can do a pretty good imitation of a rodknock (The "Rich Little" of noises!). Since you've already got it out, it might be worthwhile to tear it COMPLETELY down and check everything, -so as not to have to leave anything to chance. Good luck with however you decide to proceed with it from here.-Jim
