Rod and main bearings
 
I am replacing the cam in my bbc I noticed very few metal particles on dip stick from cam lobes going flat. When I inspect the rod and mains what should I be looking for as far as excessive signs of where. I understand the scratches but the part I need to know is if copper is showing dose this mean the bearing need to be replaced. The motor only has about 8000 mi on it but it has been lead footed a lot.
Any advice would be nice

Is it common for the copper to be showing with this amount of miles.

Nope,... at 80,000 maybe, but not at 8000 miles...

Any ideas what woud cause this. Becides high rpm. 5500 or so not all the time but quite a bit.

Sure...the cam wiped out some lobes and all of that material was transported throughout your engine by the oil pump. The babbit material that USED to cover the copper on your bearings was basically ground off by X-cam lobes.

Unfortunately it's time to tear the entire engine apart and get everything cleaned, the crank may need to be polished, new cam bearings?? You won't know until you tear it down and inspect everything. Make sure the new engine start up procedure is done with the proper lubricants.

Hi sledneck307, High compression and lead foot will show copper . But if scratches down to copper are metal related then you need new brgs. GOOD LUCK jim

As was mentioned, the entire engine needs to come apart and jet washed.

The cause for the flat cam can be hard to figure out, But you don't want it to happen again.

Let use know all the facts you can about your engine,and the initial start-up. what oil and additive did you use in it???


Led footing WILL NOT hurt the bearings. Correctly built...You can spank that engine like a 4 year old in wal-mart with no problems.

If the oil filter bypass was plugged and a good filter would have been used nothing would have ever gotten to the bearings.

Don't most oil filters have an oil bypass? Darned inconvenient, I'd say.

We use the NAPA 1061 or the WIX 51061 and we had a circle track customer tear 4 dist. gears in one nite and at the end of the year took the engines apart and there was not a mark on anything as the filter did its job and with the 20/50 oils we use the bypass would have been bypassing oil.
