Roll Cage, how to weld the top side???

hope this topic fits here:

how do you guys weld the top side of the tubes of a roll cage?

I'm building this road racer and I'm wondering how am I gonna weld the the tubes that are next to the top?

I saw this website where they cutted holes on the floor to drop the alrady tack welded cage, fully welded the top side then raised it again and then they put plates on the floor to weld the tubes to, and then the plates to the floor, is this an acceptable method? what if something interferes, like a chassis part or a suspension anchor point or something?, please tell me what to do.

thanks

Augusto.

The method you are describing is one way, another similar is to tack the rear bars to the main hoop, break it loose from the floor and tip it forward(no door bars or roof halo yet) enough to weld the top.

I have also seen where it is acceptable to leave the last 3/4" you can't get to unwelded, then use a triangular gusset on each side of the tube intersection to reinforce the joint.

I have resorted to an old buzz box. Bend the rod at the correct angle/length. Protect the roof/headliner and carefully weld away!!

As high as possibly, about the thickness of my hand between bar and roof, just enough room to get the headliner back in if desired. Remember it has to be higher than the seated driver's helmeted head, NHRA/Drag wants 3" from top of bar to top of helmet.
